 Article-এর ব্যবহারঃ-

Article :- A, An এবং The কে ইংরেজিতে article বলে।

 Article  কোথায় বসে?

Article বা পদাশ্রিত নির্দেশক সাধারণত noun, adjective+noun, এবং adverb-এর আগে বসে এবং parts of speech-টি নির্দিষ্ট না অনির্দিষ্ট তা নির্দেশ করে।

Note:-  Parts of speech হিসেবে ব্যবহূত হয়ে adjective-এর মতো কাজ করে থাকে বলে এদের adjective-ও বলা হয়। বর্তমানে আধুনিক ইংরেজি গ্রামার-এ এদের determiner বলা হয়।

Article এর প্রকারভেদঃ-

Article দুই প্রকার। যথা:
i) Definite article,
ii) Indefinite article.
(i) Definite article : যে article নির্দিষ্ট কোনো ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা প্রাণীকে নির্দেশ করে, তাকে definite article বলে। কোনো কিছুকে নির্দিষ্ট করে বোঝাতে definite article ব্যবহূত হয়ে থাকে। যেমন:
The book is on the table.
The person who came yesterday is my friend Mr. Jahurul Islam.

(ii) Indefinite article : যে article বিশেষ কোনো ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা প্রাণীকে নির্দিষ্টভাবে না বুঝিয়ে অনির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা প্রাণীকে বোঝায়, তাকে indefinite article বলে। A ও An কে indefinite article বলে। কোনো কিছুকে অনির্দিষ্ট করে বোঝাতে indefinite article ব্যবহূত হয়ে থাকে।
যেমন:
A lion lives in a forest.
I saw a bird sitting on the wall.

Indefinite article-এর ব্যবহার:-
Article ব্যবহারের ক্ষেত্রে প্রথমেই চিন্তা করতে হবে যে article-টি তুমি ব্যবহার করতে চাইছ, তা নির্দিষ্ট না অনির্দিষ্ট। তার পরে নিয়মানুসারে তা ব্যবহার করতে হবে।

1. এক-জাতীয় সবাইকে বোঝাতে singular common noun-এর আগে a/an বসে।
যেমন:
An ant is an industrious insect.
2. সাধারণত যেসব শব্দের প্রথম অক্ষর consonant (/consonant sound), তাদের আগে a বসে এবং যেসব শব্দের প্রথম অক্ষর vowel (/vowel sound), তাদের আগে an বসে।
যেমন:
A cat is not considered as a faithful animal.
A dog is a very faithful animal.

 

3. ‘U’র উচ্চারণ যদি ‘ইউ’র মতো হয়, তাহলে সেই শব্দের আগে a বসে। যেমন:

Swapno is a university student.

Iron is a useful metal.

4. ঠিক তেমনি ‘Eu’ কিংবা ‘Ew’র উচ্চারণ যদি ‘ইউ’র মতো হয়, তাহলে সেই শব্দের আগে a বসে। যেমন: Yesterday I met a European.

          That was a ewe.

কিন্তু U-র উচ্চারণ যদি ‘আ’র মতো হয়, তাহলে তার আগে a না বসে an বসে। যেমন:

Jahir b ought an umbrella last night.

Mr. M  asud is an unfortunate man.

5. ‘O’ দিয়ে গঠিত সব শব্দের আগে an বসে। কিন্তু ‘O’র উচ্চারণ ‘ওয়া’ হলে তা দ্বারা শুরু হওয়া শব্দের আগে a বসে। যেমন:

Shila  saw a one-eyed man yesterday.

We e  njoyed a one-act drama.

6. কোনো word-এর প্রথম অক্ষর h হলে এবং তার উচ্চারণ ‘অ’র মতো হলে তার আগে an বসে। যেমন:

Mr. Mashiur Rahman is an honest man.

He is an heir.

7. যখন কোনো ব্যক্তি, বস্তু, স্থান, প্রাণী, গাছ, ইত্যাদি প্রথমবার উল্লেখ করা হয়, তার আগে a/an বসে। যেমন:

He went for an interview at the law firm this morning.

We phoned for a taxi to take us to the Shahjalal International Airport.

8. শুধু যেসব Noun গণনা করা যায়, তাদের আগে a/an বসে। যেমন:

Her mother presented her a blue skirt on her birthday.

Mehenaj has a diary like Anna.

9. যেসব Noun গণনা করা যায় না, তাদের আগেও a/an বসে যদি গঠনটি এরূপ হয় (a) a/an + countable noun + of +uncountable noun। যেমন:

The divers found a pot of gold in the sunken merchant ship.

(b) a/an + uncountable noun used as adjective +countable noun. যেমন:

Her dad gave her a gold bracelet on her birthday.

10. কোনো তুলনা করা হলে যার সঙ্গে তুলনা করা হয়, তার আগে a/an বসে। যেমন:

Mohammad Nashid is a Nelson Mendela in the Maldives.

You are a Nazrul I see!

11. কখনো কখনো preposition অর্থে a ব্যবহূত হয়। তখন সেই a কে Disguised Preposition বলে। যেমন:

The king went a (on) hunting.

12. কোনো তুলনা বোঝাতে Abstract Noun যখন Common Noun হিসেবে ব্যবহূত হয় তখন, এদের আগে a/an বসে। যেমন:

She is a beauty.

13. Exclamation বোঝাতে what এবং such এর পর a/an বসে। যেমন: What a cute baby it is!

I have not seen such a long queue!

14. কোনো এক কালে কোথাও একটি/একজন ছিল/আছে এর a আগে বসে। একে generalizing ‘a’ বলে। যেমন:

There lived a king in a village.

There are five components in a computer.

15. সংক্ষিপ্ত শব্দ বা শব্দের প্রথম অক্ষরটির উচ্চারণ শুরুতে vowel-এর মতো হলে তাদের আগে an বসে কিন্তু অক্ষরটির উচ্চারণ শুরুতে consonant-এর মতো হলে তাদের আগে a বসে। যেমন:

My friend, Palash Biswas, is an MBBS.

Mr. Ataur Rahman is a BA.

Mr. Kamrul Islam is an SP.

16. Number বা সংখ্যা থাকলে উচ্চারণ অনুযায়ী a/an বসাতে হবে। যেমন:

There was an 8 course meal after the wedding.

17. Plural Noun-এর আগে few, little, good many, lot of, great many, good deal ইত্যাদি ব্যবহূত হলে তাদের আগে a বসে। যেমন:

He earns a lot of money.

There is a little water in the pond.

There are a few pomegranates on the table.

He lived a great many years.

18. Many এবং such এর পরে singular common noun ব্যবহূত হলে তার আগে a/an বসে। যেমন:

Many a man was present in the meeting.

19. Mr. Mrs. Miss-এর আগে a বসে। যেমন:

A Mr. Biswas called at my office.

A Mrs. Shaheen Akter presented him the blue diary.

20. What দ্বারা Exclamatory sentence শুরু হলে what পরে an /an বসে। যেমন: What a nice bird it is!
What an awful remark!
21. কতগুলো Phrase-এর আগে স্বাভাবিক গঠনগতভাবেই a/an বসে। যেমন: I have a headache.
He had a bad cold.
I am in a hurry.
22. Singular Common Noun-এর আগে quite, many, rather , but, more, not, how, as, such ইত্যাদি ব্যবহূত হলে ওই singular Common Nounটির আগে a/an বসে। যেমন:
Not a person was present there.
I have never seen such a tall figure.

The-এর ব্যবহার:
1. একটি passage-এ কোনো শব্দ দ্বিতীয়বার ব্যবহূত হলে প্রথমবার ছাড়া পরবর্তী প্রতিবারের আগে The বসে। তবে নির্দিষ্ট করে বোঝানোর জন্য প্রথমবারেও The বসতে পারে। যেমন:
I have a shirt. I have bought the shirt from Jhenaidah.
The shirt is navy blue in colour.
2. পৃথিবীতে একটিই আছে এমন জিনিসের নামের আগে The বসে। যেমন: The moon shines at night.
The sun sets in the west.
The earth moves round the sun

3. বিখ্যাত গ্রন্থ (The Agnibina, The Mother, The Gitanjoli), ট্রেন (The Mahanagar, The Turna, The Mohanagar) জাহাজ (The Bangabandhu, The Titanic, The Carpanthia), মহাকাশ যান (The Apollo-11), বিখ্যাত অট্টালিকা (The Tajmahal), নদী (The Padma, The Meghna, The Jamuna), সাগর, মহাসাগর (The Atlantic, The Pacific), উপসাগর (The Bay of Bengal), পর্বতমালা (The Himalayas), দ্বীপপুঞ্জ (The Hawaii), মরুভূমি (The Shahara), ঋতু (The Autumn, The Summer, এ ক্ষেত্রে অবশ্য The ব্যবহার না করলেও হবে), দিক (The East, The west), তারিখ (যদি শেষে ‘th/st/nd/rd’ থাকে) the 10th December ইত্যাদি নামের আগে The বসে।

4. বংশ বা পরিবারের পরিচয়জ্ঞাপক নামের আগে The বসে। যেমন:
The Khans of India are dominating the Indian film industry.

5. Adjective-এর Superlative degree-এর আগে The বসে। যেমন:
Rofiussan was the best student in the department of English.
She is the most beautiful girl I have ever seen.

6. সাধারণত Adjective-এর comparative degree-এর আগে The বসে না কিন্তু যত-তত Comparative degree বোঝাতে এর আগে The বসে। যেমন:
Rima is more beautiful than Lina.
Tasnima Akter was more intelligent than Sadia Nasreen.
The more you read, the more you learn.
The sooner, the better.
. যে Noun দ্বারা পেশা বা বৃত্তি বোঝায়, তার আগে The বসে। যেমন:
Md. Minaj Uddin joined the army in 1993.

7. কোনো Common Noun দ্বারা Superlative-এর গুরুত্ব বোঝালে a/an না বসে বরং The বসে। যেমন:
Shakira is the singer of the day.

8. Adjective দ্বারা সমগ্র জাতি বা বিশেষ কোনো সম্প্রদায় বোঝালে তার আগে The বসে। যেমন:
We should not look down upon the poor.
The rich are not always happy.
The pious are blessed.

9. কোনো কিছুর অংশ বোঝাতে Adjective-এর আগে The বসে। যেমন:
He entered into the thick of the forest.

10. কোনো Common noun দ্বারা Abstract বা গুণগত আদর্শ বোঝাতে তার আগে The বসে। যেমন:
Seeing the sonsy baby, the mother rose in her.
Everybody loves the brave of the country.

11. কোনো Proper Noun-এর আগে Epithet থাকলে ওই Epithet-টির আগে বা Noun-টির পর The বসে। যেমন:
Alexander the great was a famous warrior.

12. Material Noun-এর আগে The বসে না কিন্তু কোনো নির্দিষ্ট স্থানের বা নির্দিষ্ট প্রকারের পদার্থ বোঝালে Material Noun-এর আগে The বসে। যেমন:
The water of this glass is pure.
The gold of South Africa is precious.
The perfume of France is praiseworthy.

13. Choir, orchestra এবং pop group-এর আগে The বসে। যেমন:
Nowadays the Miles is a very popular band in Bangladesh.

14. কতিপয় collective noun আছে, যারা স্বভাবতই plural. এদের আগে The বসে। যেমন:
The elite enjoy the privilege of the state.
The audience applauded the singer.

15. Musical instrument যখন বাজানো অর্থে ব্যবহূত হয়, তখন এর আগে The বসে। যেমন:
Nazmussehar can play the piano sonorously.
16. সংখ্যা প্রকাশক word একটা unit অর্থে ব্যবহূত হলে তার আগে The বসে। যেমন:
He sells mangoes by the hundred/ by hundreds [by the hundreds, dozens, scores হবে না।

 

 

যেখানে article হবে না বা বসবে না :-

1. সাধারণত খাবারের (meals) আগে A/An বসে না। তবে খাবারের আগে adjective থাকলে a/an বসে। যেমন:
Incorrect: Usually we have a breakfast at 7 am.
Correct: Usually we have breakfast at 7 am.

2. Plural noun-এর আগে a/an বসে না। যেমন:
Gardenias are beautiful and flagrant.
Horses are strong animal.

3. ভাষার নামের -এর আগে Article বসে না। যেমন:

We speak English. Bangla is our mother tongue. কিন্তু ভাষার পর Language শব্দটি থাকলে Article বসে। যেমন: The English language is interesting to learn.

4. Generally uncountable হিসেবে গণ্য advice, information, news, baggage, luggage ইত্যাদির আগে Article বসে না। যেমন:
Mr. Mashrur Shahid Hossain always gives good advice.
The RAB can collect correct information.

5. Water, milk, oil, ink, hydrogen, tea, paper ইত্যাদির আগে Article বসে না। যেমন: Paper is made of wood.
তবে Uncountable Noun-এর সঙ্গে measure words যোগ করা হলে তাদের আগে a/an বসে। যেমন:
Give me a glass of water, please.

6. Abstract-এর আগে Article বসে না। যেমন:
Kindness is great virtue.

7. রাস্তা, অ্যাভিনিউ, স্কয়ার, পার্কের নামের আগে Article বসে না। কিন্তু এদের নামের পর road শব্দটি উল্লেখ থাকলে The বসে। যেমন:
He bought a shop in ´ Park Street.
He bought a shop in the Mirpur Road.

8. Allah বা God-এর আগে Article বসে না। যেমন:
´ Allah helps those who help themselves.
Man poses; ´ God disposes.

10. বিখ্যাত গ্রন্থের নামের আগে লেখকের নাম থাকলে তার আগে Article বসে না। যেমন:
Nazrul’s Agnibina was published in 1922. (But The Agnibina of Nazrul was banned by the then British government.)

11. কোনো auxiliary এবং principal verb-এর মাঝে article বসে না। যেমন:
He was ´ disturbed by his classmates.

12. যদি adjective-এর পর কোনো noun না থাকে তাহলে to be এবং adjective-এর মাঝে article বসে না। যেমন:
These are the tips for him who is ´ careless.
But it is for him who is a careless person.

13. Proper noun এর আগে Article বসে না। যেমন:

Anisa is a good girl.

14. Material noun-এর আগে Article বসে না। যেমন:

Gold is precious.
15. Home-এর আগে বা পরে descriptive word বা phrase না থাকলে article বসে না। যেমন:
We went ´ home.
He is at ´ home.
কিন্তু home-এর আগে বা পরে descriptive word বা phrase থাকলে the বসে। যেমন:
We arrived at the bride’s home.
For some four or five hours this was the home for the queen.
